Norton Healthcare is embarking on a new bed tower and existing facility renovation at its rapidly growing Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, Ky.  Designed by DesignGroup (Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh), the project will add 70 new patient beds, align new ICU beds with the existing ICU, and add 48 med/surg beds.

On the renovation side, the second-floor surgery department will expand to provide advanced care for the estimated increase in surgeries, as well as added surgery waiting, expanded support, extended pre- and post-operative rooms, a new PACU, and six new operating rooms dedicated to neurosurgery (two of which are hybrid operating rooms). The first-floor emergency and vascular departments will also be upgraded, and the lab and materials management capabilities and processes will be expanded.

Hallmarks of the design include the creation of one identifiable main entrance and a cohesive wayfinding approach reusing the signature design from the existing building, as well as the extension of the public concourse, a clear secondary entry point for the ED, and the addition of a third patient unit separated by a transparent circulation spine allowing natural light to penetrate the new internal roof garden. The bed tower is expected to open in 2020 while the renovation work is planned to wrap up in 2022.
